Varicose Veins
Varicose veins and spider veins are a common problem that affects a great number of women and men. They occur when there is a loss of normal valve function in the veins allowing blood to flow in the wrong direction resulting in abnormally and permanently enlarged twisted veins. Loss of valve function in veins may also lead to eczema, skin ulcers or superficial blood clots.
Many varicose and spider veins are unsightly but cause no symptoms. Other may cause mild or severe ache in the legs especially after long periods of standing.
The treatment of varicose veins and spider veins is usually performed by a specialist vascular surgeon. By examining your legs, the surgeon will determine the type and extent of abnormal veins. An ultrasound will be arranged and performed to give the surgeon an accurate picture of the veins.
Your surgeon may recommend surgery or sclerotherapy to improve the leg’s appearance. Cosmetic perfection is not always attainable but usually the appearance of the legs is significantly improved and the recommended treatment always aims to achieve this.
